The Feast
of Christ the King (in the Latin Rite of the Roman Catholic Church, properly
the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe) is a relatively
recent addition to the western liturgical calendar, having been instituted in
1925 by Pope Pius XI. In 1970 its observance was moved to the last Sunday of
Ordinary Time.
Pope Pius XI instituted the Feast of
Christ the King in his 1925 encyclical letter Quas primas,
in response to growing nationalism and
secularism and in the context of the unresolved Roman Question. The title
of the feast was "D. N. Jesu Christi Regis" (Our Lord Jesus Christ
the King), and the date was "the last Sunday of the month of October - the
Sunday, that is, which immediately precedes the Feast of All Saints". In
Pope John XXIII's 1960 revision of the Calendar, the date and title remained
the same and, in the new simpler ranking of feasts, it was classified as a
feast of the first class.
After Vatican II
In his
1969 motu proprio Mysterii Paschalis, Pope Paul VI gave the celebration a new
title: "D. N. Iesu Christi universorum Regis" (Our Lord Jesus Christ
King of the Universe). He also gave it a new date: the last Sunday in the
liturgical year, before a new year begins with the First Sunday in Advent, the
earliest date for which is 27 November. Through this choice of date "the
eschatological importance of this Sunday is made clearer". He assigned to
it the highest rank, that of "Solemnity".
As
happens with all Sundays whose liturgies are replaced by those of important
feasts, the prayers of the Sunday on which the celebration of Christ the King
falls are used on the ferias (weekdays) of the following week. The Sunday
liturgy is thus not totally omitted.
In 2015,
this feast day falls on 22 November (or 25 October for those using the
traditional calendar). The liturgical vestments for the day are colored white
or gold, in keeping with other joyous feasts honoring Christ.
QUAS PRIMAS – Pope Pius XI
While the encyclical that established
this feast was addressed to Catholic bishops, Pope Pius XI wanted this feast to
impact the laity.
"The
faithful, moreover, by meditating upon these truths, will gain much strength
and courage, enabling them to form their lives after the true Christian ideal.
If to Christ our Lord is given all power in heaven and on earth; if all men,
purchased by his precious blood, are by a new right subjected to his dominion;
if this power embraces all men, it must be clear that not one of our faculties
is exempt from his empire. He must reign in our minds, which should assent with
perfect submission and firm belief to revealed truths and to the doctrines of
Christ. He must reign in our wills, which should obey the laws and precepts of
God. He must reign in our hearts, which should spurn natural desires and love
God above all things, and cleave to him alone. He must reign in our bodies and
in our members, which should serve as instruments for the interior
sanctification of our souls, or to use the words of the Apostle Paul, as
instruments of justice unto God."

It is truly meet and just, right and for our
salvation, that we should at all times and in all places, give thanks unto
Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, eternal God Who didst anoint with the oil
of gladness Thine only-begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Priest and
King of the universe: that, offering Himself as a stainless peace offering on
the altar of the cross, He might fulfill the pledges of man's redemption; and,
having all creatures subject to His power, might deliver to Thy sublime majesty
an eternal and universal kingdom, a kingdom of truth and life; a kingdom of
holiness and grace, a kingdom of justice, love and peace. And therefore with
the Angels and Archangels, with the Thrones and Dominations, and with all the
array of the Heavenly host, we sing a hymn to Thy glory and unceasingly repeat:

Consecration to Christ the King
O Christ Jesus, I acknowledge Thee as universal
King. For Thee all creatures have been
made. Do Thou exercise over me all Thy
rights. Renewing my baptismal vows, I
renounce Satan with all his works and pomps, and I promise to live as a good
Catholic and soldier of Christ.
Especially do I pledge myself to work with all my power for the triumph
of the rights of God and Thy Church, up to my death! Amen.
