NOVENA TO ST. GREGORY THE GREAT - FIFTH DAY

Pope St. Gregory the Great saved Rome from the plague he ordered a procession around the city to beg the heavens to end their affliction and their prayers were answered!

     THE ‘GREATNESS OF GREGORY’

On his father's death, Gregory converted his family villa into a monastery dedicated to the Apostle Saint Andrew. In his life of contemplation, Gregory concluded that "in that silence of the heart, while we keep watch within through contemplation, we are as if asleep to all things that are without."

Gregory had a deep respect for the monastic life. He viewed being a monk as the 'ardent quest for the vision of our Creator.’

He made the following modifications in the pre-existing practice

In the Canon of the Mass he inserted the words "diesque nostros in tua pace disponas, atque ab aeterna damnatione nos eripi, et in electorum tuorum jubras grege numerari" (order our days in Thy peace and bid us to be delivered from eternal damnation and numbered among the flock of Thy elect).

He ordered the Pater Noster to be recited in the Canon before the breaking of the Host;

He provided that the Alleluia should be chanted after the Gradual out of paschal time, to which period, apparently, the Roman use had previously confined it;

He prohibited the use of the chasuble by subdeacons assisting at Mass.

Novena Prayer to St. Gregory the Great
           (March 3 – March 11)
St. Gregory, you are known for your zeal for the Catholic faith, love of liturgy, and compassion and mercy toward those in need.  Please help and guide us so that we may share in these virtues and thereby bring Jesus into the hearts of our families and all we encounter.  We especially ask for blessings on our parish family, our priests and our deacons.

I also ask that you graciously intercede for me before God so that I might be granted the special assistance and graces that I seek…

     (Mention personal intentions here)

Help me to live as a faithful child of God and to attain the eternal happiness of heaven.

Papa Sancte Gregorius Magnus, ora pro nobis!
