Commemoration
of All the Faithful Departed
Remembrance of the departed, and prayers for them, are
tokens of true affection. And since the
faithful are moved thereto by filial piety, doubt not that this same
remembrance and prayer is profitable unto everyone that so lived in this world,
as to attain profit from such things after death. But even if some necessity permitteth not the
body to be buried, or from lack of proper facilities giveth no opportunity for
burial in a sacred place, yet should not prayers for the soul of the departed
be omitted. The duty of such prayers is
taught us by the Church, which hath undertaken, as an obligation, to offer them
for all the departed.
****
On all the days from November I though November 8
inclusive, a plenary indulgence, applicable only to the Poor Souls, is granted
to those who visit a cemetery and pray even if only mentally for the departed.
The Church pays, day by day, a special veneration to
some one of the holy men and women who have helped to establish it by their
blood, develop it by their labors, or edify it by their virtues. But, in
addition to those whom the Church honors by special designation, or has
inscribed in her calendar, how many martyrs are there whose names are not
recorded! How many humble virgins and holy penitents! How many just and holy
anchorites or young children snatched away in their innocence! How many
Christians who have died in grace, whose merits are known only to God, and who
are themselves known only in heaven! Now should we forget those who remember us
in their intercessions? Besides, are they not our brethren, our ancestors, friends,
and fellow-Christians, with whom we have lived in daily companionship—in other
words, our own family? Yea, it is one family; and our place is marked out in
this home of eternal light and eternal love.
PRAYER FOR THE
FAITHFUL DEPARTED
O God, the Creator and Redeemer of all the faithful,
grant to the souls of thy servants departed full remission of all their offenses, that, through the help of pious supplications, they may obtain the
pardon of which they have been always desirous: who livest and reignest, world
without end. Amen.
V. Give them, O Lord, eternal rest.
R. And let perpetual light shine upon them.
V. May they rest in peace.
R. Amen.
Save us, O Lord, waking; and keep us, sleeping; that
we may watch with Christ, and rest in peace. Amen.
Preserve us as the apple of thine eye. and protect us
under the shadow of thy wings. Vouchsafe, O Lord, to keep us this night without
sin.
Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us.
May thy mercy be upon us, O Lord, as we have put our
trust in thee.
O Lord, hear my prayer, and let my supplications come
unto thee.
NOVEMBER 2
COMMEMORATION OF ALL FAITHFUL DEPARTED
ALL SOULS DAY
INTROIT 4 Esdras
2:34-35
Requiem æternam dona eis, Domine: et lux perpetua
luceat eis. Ps. 64: 2-3. Te decet hymnus, Deus, in Sion, et tibi reddetur vo-
tum in Jerusalem: exaudi orationem meam, ad te omnis caro veniet.
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord: and let
perpetual light shine upon them. Ps. A hymn, O God, becometh Thee in Sion, and
a vow shall be paid to Thee in Jerusalem: O Lord, hear my prayer; all flesh
shall come unto Thee.
COLLECT
O God the Creator and Redeemer of all the faithful:
grant to the souls of Thy servants and handmaidens the remission of all their
sins: that through our devout prayers, they may obtain that pardon which they
have always desired: Who livest and reignest.
EPISTLE 1
Corinthians 15: 51-57
Brethren: Behold I tell you a mystery: we shall all
indeed rise again, but we shall not all be changed. In a moment, in the
twinkling of a eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet shall sound, and the
dead shall rise again incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this
corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal, must put on immortality.
And when this mortal hath put on immortality, then shall come to pass the
saying that is written: Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy
victory? O death where is thy sting? Now the sting of death is sin: and the strength
of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, Who hath given us the victory through
our Lord Jesus Christ.
GRADUAL: 4
Esdras 2: 34-35
Eternal rest give to them, O Lord; and let perpetual
light shine upon them. V. The just shall be in everlasting remembrance; he
shall not fear the evil hearing.
TRACT
Absolve, O Lord, the souls of all the faithful
departed from every bond of sin. V. And by the help of Thy grace, may they be
enabled to escape the judgment of punishment. And enjoy the happiness of light
eternal.
GOSPEL John 6:
51-55
At that time: Jesus said to the multitudes of the
Jews: Amen, amen, I say unto you, that the hour cometh, and now is, when the
dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God; and they that hear shall live. For
as the Father hath life in Himself, so He hath given to the Son also to have
life in Himself; and He hath given power to do judgment, because He is the Son
of man. Wonder not at this, for the hour cometh wherein all that are in graves
shall hear the voice of the Son of God; and they that have done good things
shall come forth unto the resurrection of life, but they that have done evil,
unto the resurrection of judgment.
OFFERTORY
O Lord Jesus Christ, King of glory, deliver the souls
of all the faithful departed from the pains of Hell and the bottomless pit:
Deliver them from the jaws of the lion, lest hell engulf them, lest they be
plunged into darkness; but let the holy standard-bearer Michael lead them into
that holy light, which once Thou didst promise to Abraham and to his seed.
Lord, in praise we offer to Thee sacrifices and prayers; accept them on behalf
of those who we remember this day: Lord, make them pass from death to life,
which Thou once promised to Abraham and to his seed.
SECRET
Look with mercy, we beseech Thee, O Lord, upon the
Sacrifice which we offer to Thee on behalf of the souls of Thy servants and
handmaidens; that those to whom Thou didst grant the merit of Christian faith,
may likewise receive its reward. Through our Lord.
PREFACE FOR THE
DEAD
It is truly meet and right and for our salvation: that
we should at all times and in all places give thanks to Thee O Lord, Holy
Father, almighty and eternal God, through Christ our Lord: in Whom has shone
upon us the hope of blessed resurrection, so that those who are afflicted by
the certainty of dying, may be consoled by the promise of future immortality.
For to Thy faithful, Lord, life is changed, not taken away; and when the abode
of this earthly sojourn is destroyed, an eternal dwelling is prepared in
Heaven. And therefore with Angels and Archangels, with the Thrones and
Dominations, and with all the heavenly hosts, we sing a hymn to Thy glory,
saying without ceasing:
Sanctus,
Sanctus, Sanctus…
COMMUNION: 4
Esdras 2:34-35
Let everlasting light shine upon them, O Lord, with
Thy saints for Thou art gracious. Eternal rest grant them, O Lord; and let
perpetual light shine upon them. With Thy saints forever for Thou art gracious.
POSTCOMMUNION
May the prayer of Thy servants, O Lord, Benefit the
souls of Thy servants and handmaidens; that Thou mayest deliver them from all
their sins and make them partakers of Thy redemption, Who livest and reignest.
